Keynotes:

Jan Larsson: On competence at work – what it is and how to get it.

Associate professor Jan Larsson, MD, PhD, is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, Uppsala University (Sweden). He is a physician anaesthetist and a researcher at the Department of Health Services Research at the Uppsala University. Prof. Larsson is currently involved in several ongoing studies on professional roles and specialist training in anaesthesia.
Prof. Larsson lectures about professional competence and has been teaching in courses for mentors in anaesthesiology arranged by the Swedish Association of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care. He is also linked to the Clinical Training Centre at Uppsala University Hospital, working with team training in a simulator setting for medical and nurse students and for hospital staff.
In his lecture, prof. Larsson will talk about different dimensions of competence at work and will discuss how to learn a professional job.
The title of his lecture is: ‘On competence at work – what it is and how to get it.’

Aidan Byrne: Humans – Digital or Analogue.

Professor Aidan Byrne is the Director of Theatres and Anaesthesia at Morriston Hospital, Swansea and Honarary Professor at Swansea University School of Medicine (United Kingdom). He graduated from Cardiff University in 1987 as a doctor and after basic training worked in anaesthesia and developed an interest in simulation-based training.

Prof. Byrne contributed to development of simulation training, especially as president of a UK simulation society. He designed and built the Anaesthetic Computer Controlled Emergency Situation Simulator (ACCESS), which was the first full scale anaesthesia training simulator in the UK. He has worked as Programme Director for an undergraduate Medical School, as well as a Professor of Simulation and a Director of Postgraduate Studies.
His main research interests are in the effects of workload on humain performance and in particular the measurement of mental workload in real/simulated practice and its role in learning and error.
In his lecture Prof. Byrne is going to focus on ideas about how new ideas about human cognition can suggest different ways of training and assessing.

The title of his lecture is: ‘Humans – Digital or Analoguue?
